How to keyword stock photos for Adobe Stock

Jan 14, 2026

On Adobe Stock, your keywords are the single biggest lever you control. A technically perfect photo with weak metadata is effectively invisible, while an average image with sharp, relevant keywords can earn for years. This guide breaks down a repeatable keywording system you can apply to every upload.

Start with the literal, then go conceptual

Buyers search in two modes: they describe what they see, and they describe what they need. Cover both. First list the literal contents of the frame — the subject, objects, setting, colours, and actions. Then add the concepts a buyer might be shopping for, such as 'teamwork', 'freedom', or 'sustainability'. The literal terms get you found; the conceptual terms get you bought.

Order matters more than you think

Adobe Stock gives more weight to your first keywords. Put the most important, most relevant terms at the top of the list and let relevance decay as you go. Don't bury your strongest term at position 40.

Build each keyword set in layers

  • Subject: who or what is the photo of (woman, laptop, mountain, coffee).
  • Action: what is happening (typing, hiking, pouring, smiling).
  • Setting: where it takes place (office, kitchen, forest, studio).
  • Attributes: colours, number of people, time of day, season.
  • Concept: the idea a buyer is shopping for (success, calm, growth).
  • Mood: the emotional tone (cozy, dramatic, energetic, minimal).

Avoid the common mistakes

Keyword stuffing and irrelevant terms hurt you twice: they dilute relevance and they frustrate buyers who click through and bounce. Never add keywords for things that aren't in the image. Skip camera jargon ('bokeh', 'f1.8') unless it's genuinely the subject. And don't repeat the same idea in five near-identical words — variety beats redundancy.

How many keywords?

Aim for roughly 25 to 45 strong keywords. Past that point, you're usually adding noise. Quality and ordering beat raw quantity every time.

Doing this by hand for a 300-image batch is brutal. ImageToStock generates ordered, relevance-ranked keyword sets for every image automatically, so you can review and ship instead of typing for hours.
