Best practices for stock photo titles

Feb 3, 2026

Your title does double duty: it tells the algorithm what your image is, and it tells a human buyer why they should click. Get both right and your click-through rate climbs. Here's how to write titles that perform.

Be specific and descriptive

Vague titles like 'Beautiful nature' tell search engines nothing. A specific title — 'Hiker watching sunrise over misty mountain valley' — names the subject, action, and setting in one natural phrase. Specificity is what surfaces you for long-tail searches, which convert far better than generic ones.

Write for humans, not robots

Stuffing keywords into your title reads as spam and can get titles rejected. Write a clean, grammatical phrase a person would actually say. The keywords field is where you exhaustively cover terms; the title is where you communicate.

A simple title formula

  • Subject + action + setting: 'Woman reading book in sunlit cafe'.
  • Lead with the most searchable noun.
  • Keep it 5 to 12 words — long enough to be specific, short enough to scan.
  • No trailing period, no ALL CAPS, no file names or camera codes.

Mind each platform's rules

Adobe Stock and Shutterstock have slightly different length limits and style preferences. A title that's clean and descriptive travels well across all of them, which is why we recommend writing one strong human-readable title and letting your export adapt it per platform.

Test and iterate

If an image gets impressions but few downloads, the issue is often the title or thumbnail, not the keywords. Revisit underperformers and rewrite titles to be more concrete. Small wording changes can meaningfully shift performance over time.
